I love this, Emma - that wonderful Beatrix Potter toasted cheese illustration! someone should reprint it as a birthday card - but really because of what you say about Victorian women's networks, and how (being kept out of formal education) they shared knowledge with others. So interesting, and something I'm looking into with the first women's colleges at Cambridge starting at that time.

It is wonderful, isn't it? One thing I'm now resolving is to go and see some of her work, there are quite a few places with collections, including Perth and of course in the Lakes.

That would be a treat! Visiting her cottage (and seeing Herdwick sheep) was a highlight of my trip to the Lakes a few years ago.

Thank you for this article,I loved it. I love Beatrix Potter's illustrations but know very little about her life, so I really enjoyed this article

Thank you so much.

Thank you very much for mentioning Helen Bradley, and my post, and I hadn't considered how geographically close they were and how single minded entrepreneurial they both were. I didn't know of Alice Woodward either - a fascinating rabbit hole, all round. Thank you!

I did wonder if you would know of her. I've only done a superficial dig - she seems to have had a long and interesting career. Maybe you can add her to your list!

I have! So many that have just disappeared.
